Fidget Quilts

Fidget quilts are small works of art made with love for people living with dementia.

The idea is to provide tactile stimulation for fidgeting hands. Buttons, zippers, tassles, textured fabric :: anything that can be incorporated into a small lap quilt.  These little quilts have been shown to have a calming effect.  What a nice idea.

This is what happens if I forget to close the door to my sewing room.  It's like having a toddler underfoot.  It all starts out very sweet...until I "encourage" him to move.  Notice the scowl in the photo below.  And yes, he won.

This is my first completed fidget quilt :: a contribution to my guild's charitable project.

The next one will be masculine and I've already requested a flannel shirt donation from my dad.  I'm thinking a pocket will be nice.

My favorite kind of quilting :: small, quick, and for a very good cause.

  1. My mom is 82 & has Alzheimer's.Her body is fine (for someone her age)and is just in the beginning stages of her mind going. I plan to make one of these for her, because yes, the hands need something to do...all the time. Thanks so much for the idea,I never would have thought to do something like this! ☺ tracim @truevine.net

  3. This is such a wonderful idea! My mom is 69 and has advanced dementia. She started with signs in her late 50's. It is such a difficult disease to deal with. I know she would love something like this. I can't wait to make it for her. Thank you so much for sharing this.
