The Joy of Cooking

One of the things I was most excited about when we moved into our current house was the kitchen. It's not large, but it's laid out such that two people can comfortably work together. The flow is nice too, just a few steps and everything is within reach. I dreamed about hubby and I cooking together, over a glass of wine, chit-chatting all the while.
We've been in our home four years now and we've spent some days cooking together. It's not exactly how I'd envisioned it. Did I tell you hubby is a man of few words? It goes something like this: I update hubby on everything that's going on in my life...I then ask hubby a question or two...Hubby responds with a one-word answer...I think of something else to say...Hubby doesn't respond to what I just said so I ask him if he heard me...Hubby says that he heard me but it wasn't a question so he didn't know he was supposed to respond...I say to hubby, "I was thinking that we'd talk while we cook together"... Hubby says, (as he's concentrating intensely on his task) "I'm working". And so it goes. I've learned not to have expectations while we're cooking. Just sharing time together is special enough for me. I can feel the love.
Over the weekend hubby made Spicy Shredded Pork from our newest cookbook, The Pioneer Woman Cooks. We served it on a corn tortilla with cilantro lime rice, sauteed veggies, salsa, sour cream and Chipotle Pepper Sauce. Hubby gives this recipe 4.5 stars out of 5 and our son gives it 5 out of 5. You can find the recipe here on The Pioneer Woman Cooks site. I made crock pot macaroni and cheese. I'll tell you more about that later.

  1. I just found your site from the flicker group of Market Bags, your bag is lovely and I am inspired to get started with some fabric in my stash. I just had to comment on this post because I laughed out loud when I read it! This is just like my darling hubby and myself! Recently we were meeting "potential" in-laws for lunch with our daughter and boyfriend and as we were traveling I gave him a little pep talk about chatting with them! He is the most sweet, humble, considerate man I know but is not a big chatter! He just hates people who do nothing but talk so consequently he over compensates! So we decided that this day it was fine to explain his work because they might actually be interested. We had a lovely lunch!

You have a beautiful blog. I'll be lurking all over it when I have time. Oh and now I'm going to have to invite some people over and try this recipe!!

  2. Becky - Thank you for sharing your story. It sounds as though our hubbies are quite similar in character - sweet, humble, considerate and quiet. I'm glad your lunch was a success.

Best of luck in making your Market Bag. It's loads of fun.
